What does that mean?
When we think about “doing our makeup”, we picture the moment we’re standing in front of the mirror, brush in hand, ready to set product down on our skin. Considering the fact that so many of us arrive at this moment every day, you’d think that the application process that follows would feel simple and easy— almost automatic. But, for many us, this is a moment filled with uncertainty. Our makeup routines feel like a guessing game, and looking for answers only makes us more confused.
Why does that happen?
There are a lot of reasons! Let’s start by thinking about everything that truly contributes to that moment in the mirror. You start with a canvas— a living, breathing canvas with its own set of unique features. Then, you decide to enhance it with product. Can you envision a clear and specific result? Which products will work best to achieve it? Which of your brushes and tools should you reach for? Where do you place them down on your canvas? How will the product perform on your skin? How will the products interact with each other? How can you edit a look if you aren’t happy with the result? Are you unhappy with the product, or is the error in the application?
These lingering questions have likely sent you searching for answers on the internet.
The information must be out there! But who do I listen to? Will their approach work for me? Can I trust in a recommendation, or are they just trying to sell me something? What if I waste my money on something that doesn’t work? What time is it anyway? I’ve been on YouTube for how long? This is pointless. It’s better to stick with what I know. But does that mean I have to settle for something I don’t really like?
“Doing your makeup” isn’t just doing your makeup. It’s a process that asks you to be an artist, a chemist, a biologist, a researcher, and a professional shopper— all at the same time— for a task that should only take about 15 minutes to complete. The cost is incredibly high. At the same time, it’s something you want to feel good about. So, how can you make peace with those two things?
Practical Makeup is both a service and a method. After working with people one-on-one for many years, I realized that all anyone really needs is direction— a clear sense of where you’re going, a good understanding of why, and a manageable amount of knowledge to call upon and inform your decision making in every step you take to get there.
In a Practical Makeup lesson, two things are happening at once: we’re honing-in directly on a personalized solution, but through our exploration of its benefits, we’re also identifying essential cause and effect patterns that lead to greater comprehension of the entire subject. The connections are logical and grounded. The benchmarks are solid and reliable. As soon as your attention is on them, the pathway to the result is clear and intuitive.
With only one in-person lesson and some personalized reference materials, we’ll get to the answers, but you’ll leave with confidence and clarity about how to continue to sharpen your skills, engage in the market as an informed shopper, and look to your makeup as a source of enjoyment and exploration.
So, in that way, we teach a man to fish as we navigate the waters.
In a practical way, we work as a team to take ownership over the process of doing your makeup.
Either way, I am happy you’re here, and I’m happy to help.
